Inane Blathering

Since I mentioned inane blathering in my prior post I thought I should do some post haste.

Just got back from Texas. It was really good seeing my dad, my brother, my sister-in-law, nephews, friends (hi Georgia and Milton!! Beckett!!). I got to talk to my dad’s girlfriend and that was very good also. Because it was my nephew’s high school graduation, I also got to see my mom and so bonus!

Texas was uncharacteristically cool for the beginning of June due to the rains, which I caught just the very tail end of. But true to form, it was hot and steamy by the 3rd day I was there. That’s the Texas I know and tolerate!

While there I ate the second best Indian food I’ve ever had (the first being in Chelmsford England). In Austin there’s a place called The Clay Pit and I highly recommend it. Even with my difficult to dine out diet they made it easy. Nothing made my stomach roil, and in fact, my stomach was incredibly calm which almost never happens when I dine out.

Also while there I listened to some incredible jazz care of KNTU-FM 88.1. Listen online at KNTU 88.1 The One. I listened in the car with my dad since we could agree on that station but I’m listening in my office and the stream is very smooth (currently The George Gee Swing Orchestra “Bedrock”).

Once I got home (late with early appointments) and started doing laundry and grocery and all the things that fall by the wayside for 2 weeks, 2 weeks of office mail anyone?), I sat down yesterday to watch the movie 42, about Jackie Robinson. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I don’t know how accurate it was but I thought the acting was good and the troubles with being the first black baseball player in the major leagues was handled well.

I was reading All the Light You Cannot See by Anthony Doerr last month and when I was done I really needed something light and airy. I had received an advance reader’s copy of Steve Martini’s The Enemy Within so I started that just before I traveled. I am thoroughly unused to carrying a book with me, having mostly switched to Kindle almost 5 years ago (they don’t even make my Kindle anymore) but the book pulled me in so I read it on the plane and finished it while away. The book is good. It just came out in hard back and it’s a great “beach read”.

I immediately started reading the first book in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. I’ve already been watching the show, and I’m hooked on both. The show just finished its second season and I’ve got about 25% more of this book to finish. I’ll definitely keep reading, although not right away. I have lots more to read both on my real and virtual shelves before I dig in to volume 2.

Oh yeah, still doing okay on the “diet”. I ate some corn chips while away and had no adverse reaction (yay!!). On the other hand, I ate at a restaurant where they are known for pancakes (not IHOP) and my tummy was not happy the entire next day or the day after that. My weight has been relatively stable for 4 or 5 months.

So that’s what I’ve been up to lately. On that note, I will leave you so I can jam to Steve Cromity singing “Old Devil Moon”.
