The Facebook Dilemma

FB, where you sometimes learn more about people than you want to know. You learn about their politics, racism, genderism, and overall bigotry.

Mostly you learn that many people are incredibly negative and full of anger – at everything and everybody.

Now that it’s the beginning of the presidential campaign season, it’s  only going to get worse.

I find that all of this negativity adversely affects me. I don’t like rising (or more to the point falling) to their level. I want to live in the sunshine. I fall short of my desire sometimes and do fall. I occasionally have to remind myself of that old saw “would you rather be right or would you rather be happy”. The desire to be right is sometimes quite great.

Consequently I vascillate between staying and leaving FB on a regular basis. I truly don’t know what to do.  There’s the FB “addiction” to deal with – the withdrawal.  Then there’s the very real fact that sometimes I learn more about what’s going on among friends and family through FB than I learn any other way.

I’ve started unfollowing  certain people.  That’s different than unfriending. I can still see their FB pages and they can see mine.  I have started posting more and more positive messages from Louise Hay, Abraham-Hicks and other positive and spiritual-minded FB posters. I’m more interested in Titus and His Girl Hailey and other “puppy posters”. Basically I’m reading and posting those things that make me smile and feel good.

In the meantime I’m planning on cutting down my trips to FB. Baby steps.

  1. Love your stuff, Suz!😃. I actually have started using the “I don’t want to see this” button on FB, and maybe the algorithm is cutting down on some of the crap it shows me. I have many friends who’s ideologies are very different from mine- I love them, bless them, and skip their irritating or offensive posts, hanging on to my mantra, “Most people are doing the best they can with what they know and believe to be true at this time.” And breathe! Lol. And then do precisely what you said- go find all the uplifting puppy, cat, funny and inspiring videos and posts I can. It’s a double edged sword, that Facebook. xxoo

    • Andi hey!
We have similar thought patterns. Sometimes I’m so horrified by what I read and God forbid I write my beliefs in response. I was recently ganged up on by a few people for disagreeing with them. That’s what instigated this post but it’s been bubbling inside me for a long while. Thanks for reading. Don’t be a stranger. Suz
